Solon seeks tax exemption for Pia Wurtzbach's Miss Universe-earnings

Cagayan de Oro Rep. Rufus Rodriguez said on Wednesday that he would file a measure that would not only bestow on Miss Universe Pia Wurtzbach the title of “Ambassador of Goodwill”, but would also exempt her from paying taxes on her pageant earnings.

“She has given honor to the Philippines and our city. One way we could honor her is to exempt her income from the pageant from taxes,” he said Wednesday.

Wurtzbach hails from Cagayan de Oro City.

According to the official Miss Universe website, the pageant winner would receive a year-long salary as well as luxury accommodations in a New York City apartment, complete with living expenses, throughout the duration of her reign.

The winner will also receive a custom diamond tiara and jewelry designed by Diamonds International Corporation, which Rodriguez's resolution would also exempt from any taxes.

“All the more should her crown not be taxed. The gems are part of the crown, and they should be exempted from any taxes as a way of acknowledging and giving honor to her,” he explained.

Rodriguez hoped that Wurtzbach would be present for the conferment of the distinctions he and his colleagues will propose before the House adjourns for the election campaign period on Feb. 6.

According to the Bureau of Internal Revenue website, income derived by a Filipino citizen from a foreign source was taxed, unless the taxpayer claims the Double Taxation-Agreement benefit, if the foreign source happens to be in a country where the Philippines has an existing tax treaty, to enjoy a reduced tax rate or exemption. — DVM, GMA News
