60 YEARS AFTER PASSING

Late President Quirino's remains to be transferred to Libingan ng mga Bayani

The remains of the late President Elpidio Quirino will be transferred to the Libingan ng mga Bayani in Taguig City on Monday.

Quirino, the sixth Philippine president, died of a heart attack on Feb. 29, 1956 at the Philippine Center in New York City and was buried at the Manila South Cemetery in Makati City.

His remains' transfer was timed with his 60th death anniversary.

The Libingan serves as a final resting place for Filipino presidents, dignitaries, soldiers, national artists/scientists/boy scouts, and thousands of soldiers who perished in the Second World War and the Korean War.

The Philippine Army said Quirino's remains will be buried at the Libingan at noon with full military honors by a brigade-size ceremonial element.

The Philippine Army said remains of the late president will arrive at the Libingan at around 11 a.m.

Members of the Quirino family, President Benigno Aquino III, officials of the National Historical Commission of the Philippines and other government officials are expected to attend the ceremony.

At least 1,300 military personnel, ROTC cadets and reservists will also participate in the ceremony. —ALG, GMA News
