Duterte explains ‘Emilio Aguinaldo’; says campaign contributors were from Davao City

After evading a question on his biggest campaign contributors during Sunday’s PiliPinas Debates 2016, Mayor Rodrigo Duterte revealed on Monday that most of them were from Davao City.

During the debate, moderator Karen Davila asked Duterte to name his campaign’s biggest donor. The Partido Demokratiko Pilipino-Lakas ng Bayan (PDP-Laban) standard bearer replied, "Nasa bukid, ma'am."

Pressed for a name, Duterte replied, "Emilio Aguinaldo."

But on Monday the mayor said that there really was no “Emilio Aguinaldo”, and that most of his contributors were based in Davao City. “Wala masyado sa labas,” he added.

Asked to explain why he wouldn’t name his biggest donors, Duterte said he would name them after the elections.

“Sino ba naman ang magbigay sa iyo kung ibulgar mo iyong pangalan niya? You can write it sa Comelec [Commission on Elections] pero after. Huwag ngayon,” Duterte explained.

In March, Duterte also evaded a question on his campaign donors and said that an anonymous Chinese donor paid for his pre-campaign ads.

Meanwhile, his supporters on Sunday night thought of creative ways to explain the role of “Emilio Aguinaldo” in Duterte’s campaign.

Some pointed out that first president of the Philippines is the face of the five peso coin.

“The biggest donors of Duterte are the smallest people who can only afford an Emilio Aguinaldo para sa kampanya ng ?#‎TunayNaPagbabago,” Duterte spokesperson Peter Laviña said in a Facebook post. — DVM, GMA News
