Food poisoning mars Bohol wedding; 1 dead, 100 hurt

A wedding reception in Bohol province took a dreadful twist Saturday after one person died while 100 others were hospitalized because of food poisoning, GMANews.TV learned Monday. Responding health personnel said the victims vomited and complained of diarrhea after eating foods served during reception in Batuan town. Authorities in the province have yet to release the result of their investigation as of posting time. They also still have not made public the identities of the victims, most of whom were residents of Sta. Cruz village in Batuan town. Initial reports said some victims have been given medical attention and were already discharged from the hospital. On March 10 last year, some 27 students of San Jose Elementary School in Mabini, Bohol died while 60 others were hospitalized after eating a local delicacy called maruyang balanghoy (fried cassava) during school recess. The children reportedly bought their snack from a vendor selling outside the school premises. Health experts said some symptoms of food poisoning such as abdominal pains, diarrhea, vomiting, nausea, and fever can last for days. They said germs may contaminate food through unsanitary handling of foods or kitchen utensils. -GMANews.TV
