(Update) Improvised explosives found in Pasay shanty
(Updated 3:35 p.m.) Two improvised explosive devices were discovered inside a shanty in Pasay City before noon Friday. Lawmen identified a certain Glenn Mercadeja, 30, as the owner of the explosives which were found inside a residence in the city's Malibay district. Mercadeja was not in the area when the items were discovered as his mother reportedly evicted him from their rented shanty before. Radio station dzBB reported that the explosive materials were placed inside two mineral water bottles filled with liquid and stuffed with nails, with a wick sticking out. The shanty's landlord alerted village captain Agustin Morga about the presence of the explosives. The radio report also said that when operatives of the Special Weapons and Tactics arrived, they failed to find any explosive to defuse as the devices have already been turned over to the village officials. An earlier radio report said the improvised explosive devices were found near the Philtranco bus terminal at Epifanio delos Santos Avenue (EDSA) in Pasay City. The discovery came a day after the Philippine National Police (PNP) announced the arrest of a suspected Abu Sayyaf member at a passenger ferry from Cebu bound for Metro Manila. The PNP said it has tightened security in Metro Manila to prevent sympathy or diversionary attacks by the Abu Sayyaf, whose members are being hunted down in Basilan and Sulu. - GMANews.TV
