Bato meets with Koreans in Pampanga, apologizes for Jee Ick Joo slay

Philippine National Police (PNP) chief Director General Ronald dela Rosa on Wednesday faced the Korean community in Clark, Pampanga, and apologized for the killing of Korean businessman Jee Ick Joo.

"I would like to apologize for the death of your compatriot, Mr. Jee Ick Joo," Dela Rosa said in a report by GMA News' Mariz Umali on "24 Oras."

"The Jee Ick Joo incident should be the last incident that victimize a Korean national," he added.

Jee was taken from his home in Angeles City, Pampanga, by members of the PNP-Anti-Illegal Drugs Group in October and was killed later on inside Camp Crame in Quezon City.

In a separate incident last year, three Koreans in the same subdivision as Jee were robbed by members of the Angeles City police.

Dela Rosa, at a press briefing, admitted that the problem "stemmed from the wrongdoings of our rogue cops."

The report said an estimated 20,000 Koreans live in Pampanga province and 90,000 in the whole country.

Before meeting with the Korean community, Dela Rosa met with Korean Ambassador to the Philippines Kim Jae-shin, Pampanga Governor Lilia Pineda, Angeles City Mayor Ed Pamintuan and other police officials, the report said.

Kim, for his part, thanked the PNP for its actions on Jee's case.

"Now we are closely cooperating with Director General Dela Rosa to cope with this difficult situation," he said.

He also said they appreciate President Rodrigo Duterte's "special concern on these matters." —KBK, GMA News
