EDSA 1 flower offering reenacted at #EDSA31
Protesters at the 31st anniversary of the People Power Revolution on Saturday reenacted an iconic moment of the bloodless 1986 uprising.
Members of the The Silent Majority group went around the People Power Monument carrying flowers and handing them over to fellow protesters.
"Mamimigay kami ng flowers. Significance ng EDSA '86. Parang re-enactment," said Archie Abrencillo, a Silent Majority member.
The group wanted to highlight the moment when protesters handed flowers to soldiers during the 1986 revolution that overthrew dictator Ferdinand Marcos.
While they handed flowers, other volunteers of the group waved streamers around as they circled the crowd.
Sixty-year-old Joe Herrera, another member of the Silent Majority, said that they were fighting for democracy, human rights, and equality.
"Karapatang pantao, demokrasya, at pagkapantaypantay. Magmula nung nagkakaisip ako hanggang sa maging senior citizen ako, 'yan pa rin ang pinaglalaban ko," he said.
He said that he has been an activist since the assassination of Ninoy Aquino, and participated in every rally until Marcos was overthrown.
"Nung EDSA 1, simula night one nandito na kami. Malaki sa 'kin yun, yung maging kasali," he said.
What makes EDSA 31 memorable is the appearance of politicians who were not tolerating the injustices under the current administration, he said.
Politicians who attended the People Power anniversary included former President Noynoy Aquino, Vice President Leni Robredo, and Senators Bam Aquino, Risa Hontiveros, Franklin Drilon, and Kiko Pangilinan. —ALG, GMA News
