DOJ orders NBI to probe Resorts World attack

Justice Secretary Vitaliano Aguirre II on Sunday ordered the National Bureau of Investigation (NBI) to conduct an investigation on the Resorts World Manila attack last week, which left 38 people dead.

Under Department Order 354, Aguirre ordered the NBI to look further into the attack at the Resorts World Manila in Pasay City.

Aguirre said the probe will look at the possibility of any criminal, civil, or administrative culpability of any agency or office of the government.

It will also look at the criminal, civil, and administrative culpability against the owners, managers, and employees of Resorts World Manila.

"We need to know and to determine the responsibility and the liability, if any, of anyone which made possible the tragic events at Resorts World Manila. Whoever is responsible for allowing this tragedy to occur should be made accountable under our laws and before courts," Aguirre said in a statement on Sunday.

"We will be remiss in our duties if we fail to do so. The Filipino people, the families of the victims and the memories of the innocent victims themselves deserve no less! Tragedies like these should not be allowed happen again," he added.

The Philippine National Police (PNP) has already identified the Resorts World attacker as Jessie Carlos, a former Department of Finance  employee who is said to be addicted to casino gambling. —Jon Viktor D. Cabuenas/ALG, GMA News
