Kin of 3 Resorts World attack victims to enter into compromise deal

Relatives of three of the 37 victims in the deadly attack on Resorts World Manila last month are set to enter into a settlement agreement with the management of the posh casino hotel, Public Attorney's Office (PAO) chief Persida Acosta said Monday.

At a media forum in Manila, Acosta said the signing will take place on July 20, adding the settlement was agreed upon after negotiations between Resorts World Manila and the kin of Shyreen Ivy Muñoz, Pacita Conquilla and Merylle Guen Kismundo.

The PAO stands as legal counsel for 10 of the victims.

Under the draft agreement, Muñoz's family will receive at least P1 million. Resorts World will also have to provide her child, a minor, with an educational plan, health insurance plan and a job in the future.

Acosta said they are still waiting for Resorts World management to get back to them on negotiation to increase the compensatory damages from P1 million to P2 million.

Conquilla's family will get P1.8 million and educational assistance for Conquilla's child.

Kismundo's family, on the other hand, is set to receive P1.9 million as settlement.

Acosta said the amounts were on top of the P1 million the gaming firm had extended to the families of the guests and employees who perished, mostly of smoke inhalation, after a lone attacker torched gaming tables and stole casino chips last June 2.

After the attack, the gunman, later identified as Jessie Carlos, a dismissed tax specialist of the Department of Finance, committed suicide.

"Sana po tuloy tuloy ang pagpapakita ng good faith ng may-ari at pamunuan ng Resorts World para sa ganun ay kung anumang perwisyo na nagawa doon sa nakaraang pangyayari na yan ay mapagbayaran nila," Acosta said.

She also urged the casino hotel to make a good settlement offer to the other victims so as to avoid protracted litigation.

"Kami po ay desidido magkaso ng criminal case kung hindi sila makikipag-settle ng maayos dahil hinihintay na lang namin ang police report at Bureau of Fire Protection report," Acosta said.

"Sana po yung mga natitira pa (other victims) ay gandahan nila ang offer para matapos na. Nakakapagod din yung ilang taon na pabalik-pabalik ka sa korte." —KBK/KVD, GMA News
