REYES REPLACES REYES

CA presiding justice succeeds Duterte’s frat brod at SC, becomes President’s 3rd appointee

President Rodrigo Duterte has elevated Court of Appeals (CA) Presiding Justice Andres Reyes Jr. to the Supreme Court (SC), becoming the President's third appointee to the high tribunal.

SC spokesperson Theodore Te said Thursday Reyes was picked by the President to succeed SC Associate Justice Bienvenido Reyes, Duterte's fraternity brother who retired last July 6.

Andres Reyes is Duterte's third appointee to the 15-man high court, after Associate Justices Samuel Martires, who came from the Sandiganbayan, and Noel Tijam, a former CA magistrate.

A veteran jurist, Andres Reyes was appointed CA justice in 1999 and promoted as presiding justice in 2010.

The 67-year-old magistrate is also a former judge of the Metropolitan Trial Courts in Makati and San Mateo, Rizal.

He earned his law degree from the Ateneo de Manila University and master’s degree in public administration from the Philippine Women’s University.

He belongs to a family of magistrates: grandfather Alex Reyes, a former SC justice; and father, Andres Reyes Sr., a former CA presiding justice. — MDM, GMA News
