Sun.Star: Vietnamese found dead inside immigration jail
Tension gripped the detention center of the Bureau of Immigration (BI) in Bicutan, Taguig City Tuesday after a Vietnamese was found dead inside his cell. Authorities said several foreigners tried to run amuck after the dead body of the Teh Min Lieh Tien was found at 7 a.m. Tuesday. Jail warden Enrico Paner said several detainees started throwing objects at the jail guards when they tried to retrieve the cadaver of Tien inside his cell. Only the timely arrival of additional jail guards and personnel from the Taguig Police Special Weapons and Tactics (Swat) team prevented what could have been a bloody mayhem inside the BI facility. No one was injured in the ensuing incident. The official said they are still conducting an autopsy to determine the cause of the death. As a security measure, the authorities separated those suspected of involvement in the incident from the rest of the detainees. Paner said those who were separated were detainees from India, Bangladesh and Belgium. The jail is being used as a temporary detention facility for foreigners facing immigration-related problems like overstaying. Additional jail guards were also posted in the facility to prevent a similar incident. It was not the first time that such an incident took place in the facility. Last year, an inmate also went amuck and stabbed a jail guard before being shot dead by responding jail personnel. - Sun.Star
