PNP Region 7 offers Peter Lim police protection

The Philippine National Police's Provincial Regional Office 7 (PRO7) on Friday offered businessman and alleged drug lord Peter Lim police protection if Lim decides to heed a Justice Department summons.

PRO7 Regional Director CSupt. Jose Mario Espino told GMA 7 news program "24 Oras" that Lim would be provided a security detail if this would facilitate his attending the August 14 preliminary investigation.

"PRO7 is offering security for his safety to make sure that he will be given a fair chance to clear himself before the Department of Justice," Espino explained. "It is better for him to divulge everything that he knows."

Lim faces charges over his alleged involvement in the Central and Eastern Visayas drug trade.

The businessman denied all links to illegal drugs, and said that he feared for his life. He had  thus surrounded himself with bodyguards, most of whom the PNP identified as former police officers and dismissed servicemen. — Rie Takumi/DVM GMA News
