Sereno ‘committed as ever’ to be Chief Justice, says spokesperson

Chief Justice Maria Lourdes Sereno is "as committed as ever" to her position as the country's top magistrate, even as impeachment proceedings against her continue at the House of Representatives.

This is according to lawyer Josa Deinla, who serves in Sereno's team of spokespersons and lawyers.

Lawyer Winnie Salumbides, also part of Sereno's team, reiterated that stepping down "is not an option" for the Chief Justice.

"Her stance is bolstered by the fact that she did not commit any wrongdoing. Lies and malicious intrigues should not unseat those who faithfully serve our country," he told GMA News Online in a message.

Sereno is accused of culpable violation of the Constitution, corruption, other high crimes, and betrayal of public trust by lawyer-complainant Lorenzo Gadon.

Another impeachment complaint against Sereno by the non-government groups Volunteers Against Crime and Corruption and Vanguard of the Philippine Constitution was dismissed in September last year over a format error.

Amid these allegations, Gadon and presidential spokesperson Harry Roque have said Sereno should resign.

But she has earlier asserted that the "truth is on her side," and her lawyers are quick to refute accusations against their client.

The House Committee on Justice has conducted more than a dozen hearings meant to determine if Gadon's complaint has probable cause.

Supreme Court justices and officials have appeared at hearings of the House panel to shed light on the allegations, which include a failure to submit complete Statements of Assets, Liabilities, and Net Worth, delayed action in a case concerning the Maute terror group, and the purchase of a luxury vehicle.

"If she resigns, the implied message will be: If it's too difficult, quit. That is not the lesson and example which the CJ wants to impart. Instead, she wants to demonstrate resilience, commitment and dedication despite difficulties and adversity," said Salumbides.

Sereno's camp has been reported to be gearing up for what they expect would be a "fair" Senate impeachment trial.

Though she is not part of the top magistrate's legal team, Deinla said "in due time she [Sereno] and her lawyers will emerge in fighting form." — BM, GMA News
