400 Grab drivers, motorcycle riders take oath as road safety marshals

Around 400 Grab drivers and motorcycle riders on Monday took their oath as road safety marshals of the Philippine National Police–Highway Patrol Group (PNP-HPG).

PNP chief Director General Ronald "Bato" Dela Rosa led the oath-taking ceremony at PNP Transformation Oval in Camp Crame. He also led the the ceremonial posting of stickers to the vehicles of the Grab drivers.

The Grab drivers who have volunteered to act as road safety marshals will report any irregularities and illegal acts such as carnapping , highway robbery, and violations of traffic law and regulations to the HPG Text Hotline (7444-474).

Leo Gonzales, Grab Philippines' public affairs manager, said Grab drivers who were chosen to be ambassadors of road safety and security are the "cream of the crop."

"Sila po ang masasabi nating model drivers but no one is above the law so pati itong mga volunteers na 'to have to comply especially to the fact na marshal sila dapat hindi pwedeng abusuhin ang pagiging marshal nila," he said.

With the close partnership of Grab and HPG, Gonzales said they would be able to provide information such as plate number, latest booking and location of the vehicle which he said has helped solved a crime in the past.

HPG director Chief Superintendent Arnel Escobal said that road safety marshals will not be exempted once they violate the law.

"Wala namang exempted nga sa batas, so if they are violating the law, dapat hulihin," he said.

It was in July last year when Grab and the PNP-HPG signed a memorandum of agreement on road safety and security.

Aside from the oath-taking of Grab drivers, also part of Monday's ceremony was the destruction of LED lights, sirens, blinkers and other banned vehicle accessories that were seized under the HPG's campaign dubbed as "Disiplinadong Driver." —KBK, GMA News
