PNP: No security threat but cops ready for Labor Day marches

The Philippine National Police has monitored no security threat as regards the country's observance of Labor Day on Tuesday.

PNP chief Director General Oscar Albayalde said the PNP had yet to receive information on possible threats during the holiday that is expected to be marked by protests from the Left.

"Wala po tayong nakukuhang reports," Albayalde announced in an interview on "Unang Balita."

"Wala naman pong banta. However, hindi po nating pwedeng ipasawalang bahala 'yan," he added.

"Kailangan po talaga nating pag-handaan 'yan. Wala pa naman tayong namo-monitor kung sino-sino yung lalahok diyan sa rally na 'yan."

Albayalde on Sunday said the yearly labor protest will be met with maximum tolerance on part of the police.

Leftist groups claimed that 150,000 people would be mobilized for the nationwide labor protest.

"Nakahanda po yung ating kapulisan," Albayalde affirmed, "Taon-taon namang nangyayari 'yan, taon-taon nagrarally whether meron o walang issue."

Areas in Manila — Liwasang Bonifacio, Mendiola, Plaza Miranda — and Quezon City were designated for the protests.

This year's protest marches are expected to center on President Rodrigo Duterte's failure to sign an executive order against "endo" or contractualization. —Rie Takumi/NB, GMA News
