Comelec suspends proclamation of 1k SK bets

Should they win, the proclamation of some 1,000 youth candidates have been suspended by the Commission on Elections after they have been confirmed to have either violated the anti-dynasty provision of the Sangguniang Kabataan elections or have exceeded the age requirement for SK officers.

Comelec acting chairperson Al Parreño said 4,000 to 5,000 similar cases were under review even as the 2018 Barangay and Sangguniang Kabataan Elections (BSKE) ended on Monday afternoon.

"Most of them akala nila bata pa sila pero more than 24-years-old na sila," Parreño said. "Natatakot kami na may isang 40-year-old na may magse-swear in mamaya so ginawa po namin nag-suspend po kami."

"Ganun din po sa mga barangay captain at kagawad na 'di naman taga-dun sa distrito nila, nag-file pa rin, isu-suspend rin namin sila," he added.

Commissioner Luie Guia said there was a procedure for the succession if the disqualified candidates would win.

"The only way we can handle that is to file a formal procedure for cancellation of their certificates of candidacy or disqualification," Guia said.

"We are hoping that we can resolve all these cases by June 30 so that malinaw po yung succession o kaya kung cancellation po, mababaliwala yung boto, yung pinaka malaking boto after (that) yung uupo, that depends on the case that will be filed," he added.

There are 335,584 SK positions up for grabs for the 386,206 youth council candidates registered by Comelec. —NB, GMA News
