PNP honors slain SAF troopers in memorial

More than a hundred members of the Philippine National Police Special Action Force (PNP-SAF) who laid down their lives for the country were honored in a memorial on Friday.

A report by Mariz Umali said that the 44 SAF members slain in the Mamasapano clash in 2015 and the four that died during the Marawi crisis last year were among those honored.

Former Armed Forces of the Philippines (AFP) chief and now Department of Interior and Local Government (DILG) officer-in-charge Eduardo Año led the SAF memorial in Camp Bagong Diwa, Taguig City.

The memorial was held amid the controversies that the PNP is facing regarding police scalawags, who Año said were ruining the image not just of the police but the entire country.

He said that police officers should heed the discipline and patriotism displayed by the SAF.

The families left behind by the slain SAF troopers were also in attendance.

While the loss is still fresh, they said that they have accepted that this was the price of freedom. — Jessica Bartolome/MDM, GMA News
