PCOO’s Andanar: ‘We serve at the pleasure of the President’

Secretary Martin Andanar said Friday it is up to President Rodrigo Duterte whether to keep him as head of the Presidential Communications Operations Office (PCOO) amid reports of a possible leadership change.

“We all serve at the pleasure of the President,” Andanar said in a message to reporters.

News website Politiko reported that former broadcaster Jay Sonza is being considered as the next PCOO chief.

Sonza is said to be interested in leading the government’s communications arm which has been dogged by controversies under Andanar’s watch—including major errors in social media posts and press releases.

According to the report, Sonza has the support of presidential daughter and Davao City Mayor Sara Duterte.

The mayor, however, denied such claim.

“I am not aware that Mr. Sonza is seeking a PCOO post. I’m not sure if I have ever met him, I cannot remember any meeting whether casual or official. But I know he is very close to President Duterte,” Sara Duterte said in a separate text message.

“There is no truth [to the report]. I am not aware of anything of that sort.”

Sonza has yet to respond to GMA News Online’s request for his position on the matter. —VDS, GMA News
