BIR probes kidnap for ransom of revenue officers

The Bureau of Internal Revenue (BIR) is investigating alleged reports that some of its officials were kidnapped in exchange for ransom.

"Although unverified and unconfirmed, the BIR is seriously looking into the alleged incident to determine its veracity and to undertake the necessary actions, including implementing a security plan to protect its revenuers," the BIR said in a statement.

A report in the Philippine Star has it that at least eight revenue officials have been victimized by the kidnappers who allegedly demand that they be taken to the victims' homes.

The victims are then told to give the criminals their valuables including millions of pesos in cash kept in their vaults. —NB, GMA News
