SWS: Majority of Pinoys find Duterte ‘bastos’ over ‘stupid God, rape’ remarks

A majority of Filipinos found President Rodrigo Duterte "bastos" or vulgar for making controversial remarks against God and on rape, a Social Weather Stations survey showed.

The third quarter survey from the SWS presented the respondents with two of the President's pronouncements: first, his "God is stupid" remark and second, his pronouncement that there are "many" rape cases in Davao City "because of the many beautiful women living there."

The SWS said 83 percent of the 1,500 adult respondents, surveyed from September 15-23, 2018, found the President's "God is stupid" remark "bastos" or "vulgar."

Fourteen percent said it was "not vulgar," while the remaining 3 percent answered they "did not know."

Meanwhile, 63 percent found Duterte's rape remark "vulgar," 30 percent said it was "not vulgar," while 5 percent said they "did not know."

In a speech in Davao City during the opening of the 2018 National ICT Summit in June, Duterte lambasted not just the Catholic Church but also God Himself and the creation story in the Bible.

"Who is this stupid God? Estupido talaga itong p***** i** kung ganun. You created some—something perfect and then you think of an event that would tempt and destroy the quality of your work," he said.

Duterte found fault in the creation story in the Bible which said that the snake tempted Eve to eat the forbidden fruit, then she in turn gave it to Adam. "So kinain ni Adam. Then malice was born," he said.

Meanwhile, in a speech at the celebration of Mandaue City's charter day in August, Duterte — seemingly in jest — said Davao City has a high number of reported rape cases among major cities in the country because there are many beautiful women in his hometown.

"Ingon sila nga daghang rape ang Davao. Basta daghang guwapa, daghang rape (Ang sabi nila marami raw rape sa Davao. Basta maraming maganda, maraming rape)," Duterte said.

"Who agrees to do it on the first request anyway? Will the woman allow it? No. ‘Don’t, no, ahhh,’” he said.

"Nobody agrees to do it on the first try. That is rape. Even when they’re inside the cinema, she will push him away. ‘No, don’t.’ There are so many beautiful women. But if you happen to sit beside someone toothless, would you still want to do that?” — MDM, GMA News
