Alan Cayetano: There’s no such thing as dynasty kung fair ang elections

Outgoing Foreign Affairs Secretary Alan Peter Cayetano on Wednesday defended his family from the political dynasty tag.

“There is no such thing as dynasty kung fair ang elections,” Cayetano said in an interview on ANC.

His brother, film director and former Taguig Representative Lino Cayetano, filed his certificate of candidacy (COC) on Monday for a mayoralty seat in Taguig City for the 2019 midterm polls.

His sister, Taguig Representative Pia Cayetano, has also filed her certificate of candidacy on Tuesday for a Senate seat.

Cayetano himself will run for a seat at the House of Representatives, and said President Rodrigo Duterte supports his bid to become Speaker. He is set to file his COC on Friday.

In July, the Senate committees on constitutional amendments and revision of codes, and on electoral reforms and people’s participation approved a bill seeking to define and ban political dynasties.

It defined a political dynasty as the “concentration, consolidation, and/or perpetuation of public office and political powers by persons related to one another within the second degree of consanguinity or affinity.”

“If the majority of our lawmakers and the people want it, I won’t stop it. So what kung isa lang sa amin ang pwedeng tumakbo? E 'di  may private life kami. We can work on foundations, we can work for the private sector," Cayetano said. —Joviland Rita/KG, GMA News
