Enrile says he is hoping to reach 110 years
Former Senate President Juan Ponce Enrile on Wednesday said he is hoping to reach 110 years old, even as he lamented that his months-long detention at Camp Crame years ago could have killed him.
"In Camp Crame, I was physically infirm because I was immobile. I was confined in a room so little, with limited space. I could not exercise," Enrile told reporters.
"That is why I thank the Supreme Court for granting me bail on humanitarian grounds. If I stayed there (detention) until today, maybe I am dead now."
The 94-year-old Enrile, who is facing a P172-million plunder case in connection with the pork barrel scam, was at the Commission on Elections main office in Manila to refile his certificate of candidacy for senator in the 2019 elections, saying the first one had "misprints and typographical errors."
The veteran politician was detained at the Philippine National Police General Hospital in Camp Crame before the Supreme Court allowed him to post bail in August 2015, more than a year after he was arrested in connection with the alleged scam.
"When I was released by the Supreme Court, I became mobile. I go to my province [of Cagayan] every month, traveling 15 hours by car. I can still stand, I can walk erect," Enrile said.
"I hope I will reach 110 [years old], but you know, in life, you cannot control the number of your years," he added.
"The control belongs to God. He can make it long, he can make it short. I am not saying I am immortal, but only God knows." —KBK, GMA News
