ADMU academic department slams removal of Filipino subjects

The Filipino Department at the Ateneo De Manila University (ADMU) strongly opposed the High Tribunal's decision that excluded Filipino and Panitikan as core subjects in college.

"Mariing tinututulan ng Kagawaran ang anumang pagtatangka ng mga grupo o indibidwal na burahin ang Filipino sa kurikulum ng mga pamantasan at kolehiyo. Naniniwala kami na nag-uugat ang mga pagtatangkang ito sa maling pagkakaintindi sa pag-aaral at pagtuturo ng Filipino sa antas ng tersiyaryo," the department said in a statement.

"Nararapat lamang na patuloy itong ituro sa antas tersiyaryo at gradwado bilang integral na bahagi ng anumang edukasyong propesyonal," it added.

Ateneo's Filipino department underscored that the subject is not just a medium of instruction, but also a form of discipline which will also give importance to the culture and tradition of Filipinos.

"Lumilikha ito ng sariling larang ng karunungan na nagtatampok sa pagka-Filipino sa anumang usapin sa loob at labas ng akademya," it said.

"Ang pagtuturo ng Filipino ay hindi nangangahulugang pagtalikod at paglimot sa mga wikang rehiyonal. Sa katunayan, kakabit ng pag-aaral ng Filipino bilang disiplina ang pagtatanghal at paglingap ng mga wika at kultura ng bayan."

The Supreme Court (SC) has upheld the constitutionality of the controversial K to 12 program, junking all the petitions against the Enhanced Basic Education Act of 2013, and the Kindergarten Education Act.

Moreover, the SC has lifted the temporary restraining order dated April 21, 2015 on the exclusion of Filipino and Panitikan as core college courses.

Members of the academe slammed the SC decision and vowed to appeal for the return of Filipino and Panitikan as core subjects in tertiary education.

Also, the ADMU Filipino department said the decision should have been made after conducting thorough consultations among concerned parties, adding that Filipino educators will be adversely affected by the decision.

"Hindi dapat magpatupad ng anumang patakaran na batay sa mga maling pagkakaunawang ito, na tumatalima sa interes ng iilan, nang hindi gumagawa ng sapat at nararapat na konsultasyon sa mga propesyonal at dalubhasa, at nang hindi isinasaalang-alang ang karapatan at kalagayan ng mga guro at mag-aaral ng Filipino," the Filipino department said. —Anna Felicia Bajo/LBG, GMA News
