New Bucor chief Faeldon mulls relocating Bilibid prison cells to provinces

New Bureau of Corrections (BuCor) chief Director-General Nicanor Faeldon said on Monday that he plans to relocate Bilibid prison cells to the provinces within the next three years.

"Most of the problems here 'yung problema ng security and others ay the communities around it 'yun 'yung support system ng problema natin. So relocating it will solve a lot of problems," Faeldon said in Maki Pulido's report on GMA News' 24 Oras.

Faeldon said there is no need for BuCor to acquire new land properties for the said project as it already has its own available lands in Ihawig, Palawan and Sablayan, Mindoro.

The new penal facilities will be built in these properties should the plan push through.

He added that the 375-hectare land of BuCor in Muntinlupa may be leased to generate funds for the agency.

The proposed relocation, however, also means that the employees of the bureau will have to transfer to the provinces.

Most of them have already established their settlements and raised their families in Muntinlupa.

"Siyempre nalulungkot. Dito kami pinanganak pero dahil kailangan, kailangan sumunod," Senior Superintendent Elena Chua said in the report.

"'Yung mga pamilya natin 'yung matatagal na dito we will have to explain to them na ganu'n talaga lalo na ngayon under na kami ng BuCor modernization law uniformed personnel na kung ano sabi ng boss 'yun na," Senior Superintendent Celso Bravo added. — Dona Magsino/RSJ, GMA News
