Senate resolution feting Miss Universe 2018 Catriona Gray filed

A Senate resolution has been filed recognizing Catriona Gray for winning the 2018 Miss Universe crown for the Philippines on Monday morning.

Senator Juan Miguel Zubiri filed Senate Resolution 976 moments after the 24-year-old fashion model, singer and tv host bested 93 other candidates to clinch this year's Miss Universe title at the Impact Arena, Nonthaburi, Thailand.

Zubiri said that aside from impressing the judges with her gorgeousness, Gray was a clear standout since she shone the light on the plight of impoverished children in the slums of Tondo, Manila and the necessity of using her platform as a spokesperson to help these children see a more hopeful future.

“She has brought great pride, honor and glory to the country and the Filipino people worth of praise and commendation of this august chamber,” the resolution read.

Zubiri also cited Gray's invaluable work in raising awareness for various causes and by partnering with organizations to effect lasting social change such as Love Yourself which brings HIV/AIDS awareness organization and being the founder of Paraiso: The Bright Beginnings Project, a fund raising program with the goal of providing a three-storey building that would serve as a preschool for children in Baseco, Tondo (Smokey Mountain).

Gray is the fourth Filipina to win the Miss Universe crown for the Philippines after Gloria Diaz in 1969, Margarita Moran in 1973 and Pia Wurtzbach in 2015.

Prior to winning the 2018 Miss Universe title, Gray made it to the Final 3 by answering that she would be in favor of legalizing marijuana use as long as it is for medicinal purposes.

Likewise, Gray made the Final 10 by describing herself as someone who believes in the dreams of the children because these children believed that she can accomplish great things. — RSJ, GMA News
