Supreme Court mourns death of retired justice Leonardo Quisumbing

The Supreme Court is mourning the passing of retired justice Leonardo Quisumbing, who died on Sunday at 79 years old.

"Chief Justice Lucas P. Bersamin and the Associate Justices of the Supreme Court deeply mourn the passing of retired Associate Justice, Hon. Leonardo Quisumbing," the high court said in a statement.

Quisumbing was appointed to the high court in January 1998 by former president Fidel V. Ramos. He retired on November 6, 2009.

Prior to his appointment, he served as Labor secretary and Defense undersecretary during the administration of former president Corazon Aquino.

He was also Ramos' senior deputy executive secretary and held the rank of Commodore of the Philippine Coast Guard, 106th Auxiliary Squadron.

The SC said Quisumbing's remains lie in state at the San Quentin Chapel at the Loyola Memorial Chapel in Guadalupe, Makati City and may be viewed starting Monday night. The schedule of his interment will be announced later.
