Duterte orders agencies to conduct activities for International Labour Organization centenary

President Rodrigo Duterte has ordered the Department of Labor and Employment (DOLE) and other agencies to conduct activities and programs nationwide in relation to the 100th founding anniversary of the International Labour Organization (ILO).

Duterte issued the directive on April 24 through Proclamation 710 which declares 2019 as the ILO centenary.

In his proclamation, Duterte said the Philippines, a member of the ILO since 1948, “endeavors to enhance its commitment to pursue the ideals of the organization.”

He reaffirmed the Philippine government’s “full support to, and cooperation with the ILO’s mandate of promoting peace and social justice.”

The President ordered the DOLE, in cooperation with employers’ and workers’ organizations, to spearhead programs and activities nationwide in line with the ILO centenary celebration.

“All other agencies and instrumentalities of the government, specifically those involved in ILO projects, are hereby enjoined, and all local government units, as well as the private sector, are hereby encouraged to provide the necessary support and assistance to the DOLE to ensure the successful observance of the ILO centenary and the effective implementation of this proclamation,” he said.

He also tasked the Presidential Communications Operations Office to lead the information campaign aimed at “fostering ILO awareness” in the Philippines and promoting the programs and activities for the celebration.

Founded in 1919, the Geneva-based ILO aims to promote rights at work, encourage decent employment opportunities, enhance social protection and strengthen dialogue on work-related issues.
