Nograles, who served as representative of the 1st District of Davao City, passed away on Saturday at the age of 71.

According to his other son, PBA party-list Representative Jericho Nograles, the former Speaker died of "respiratory failure, secondary to pneumonia."

Although Duterte and Nograles had a rift in the past, they became friends again in recent years.

"His legacy as a leader who used his voice to speak on behalf of the Filipino people will continue to inspire other politicians and leaders who are committed to serving their countrymen," Duterte said in a statement issued on Sunday.

"May he find eternal peace and repose in the arms of our loving Father in heaven. It is also my prayer that the Lord Almighty ease your pain and that you will find solace and strength during this difficult time," he added.

House Speaker Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo and House Secretary General Dante Roberto Maling went earlier to the wake.

Other personalities who visited were Senator Koko Pimentel III, Senate President Tito Sotto III, Supreme Court Associate Justice Antonio Carpio, Solicitor General Jose Calida, Finance Secretary Sonny Dominguez, Miss Universe 1973 Margie Moran, former first gentleman Mike Arroyo, former Commission on Elections Commissioner Gregorio Larrazabal, and Supreme Court Administrator Midas Marquez.

A requiem Mass and necrological services will be held at the House of Representatives Plenary Hall on Tuesday in honor of Nograles before his family takes his remains to Davao City.

Interment will be on Sunday, May 12. —KG, GMA News
