The National Union of Journalists of the Philippines (NUJP) on Monday excoriated radio broadcaster Erwin Tulfo, saying that his work bears "little resemblance" to  journalism.

"There can be no excuse for Erwin Tulfo's utter lack of ethics and scruples in publicly insulting Secretary Rolando Bautista simply for not being able to immediately answer his demand for an interview," the NUJP said in a statement.

Tulfo drew flak last week after berating the retired army general and incumbent Social Welfare and Development chief for not being available for an interview.

While acknowledging that it is indeed the duty of journalists to seek answers from government officials, the NUJP said that Tulfo's outburst during his radio program stemmed from his "exaggerated sense of entitlement."

"The issue is Tulfo's brand of 'journalism,' and we are using the term very liberally since what he and his ilk practice bear little resemblance to the profession of truth, which, ironically, is what this administration seems to prefer even as it vilifies those who do their work seriously and credibly," it added.

The NUJP also said it hopes that the media industry will "finally realize" that revenues from irresponsible muckraking will never be enough to compensate for the damages it causes the profession and other people's reputation.

Tulfo, for his part, has already apologized for his "excessive rants" and said he mulls toning down his commentary style.

Meanwhile, the Palace commended Tulfo being "gentleman enough" to apologize and said that the public should "move forward" from the incident. — Dona Magsino/BM, GMA News
