BI’s Fugitive Search Unit (FSU) chief Bobby Raquepo on Friday said the two foreigners were arrested in Manila on Tuesday and are now detained at the BI detention facility in Camp Bagong Diwa in Taguig City.
The Chinese suspect was identified as Zheng Zhuhong, 51, who was arrested at the Aranque Market in Sta. Cruz pursuant to a mission order issued by BI Commissioner Jaime Morente.
According to BI, a warrant of arrest against Zheng was issued in 2016 by the municipal public security bureau in Jinjiang, China over her alleged involvement in economic crimes wherein she reportedly defrauded victims of more than P30 million yuan or US$4.4 million.
Chinese authorities in July sought the assistance of the BI in arresting Zheng, who fled to the Philippines in 2018.
Meanwhile, Korean national Kim Donghyun, 36, was arrested after Korean Embassy officials in Manila facilitated his surrender.
Kim was issued a deportation order by the BI board of commissioners almost three years ago after the embassy reported to the bureau that he was in the Philippines, Raquepo said.
According to the Korean Embassy, Kim and three other suspects conspired to operate and maintain a sports gambling site in the internet illegally.
The suspects gathered profits of more than US$200,000 from bettors.
Aside from deportation, the arrested fugitives will also be banned from re-entering the country as their names have been included in the BI’s list of unwanted aliens, Raquepo said. —Joviland Rita/KG, GMA News
