'Mina,' 'Lando' weaken but storm signals still up in many provinces


Typhoon "Mina" (international name: Mitag) and tropical storm "Lando" (international name: Hagibis) both weakened on Monday afternoon, although storm signals remain hoisted over several provinces. The Philippine Atmospheric, Geophysical and Astronomical Services Administration (Pagasa) said "Mina" weakened into a tropical storm and is now moving away from the land mass of Northern Luzon. In its weather bulletin, Pagasa said that as of 4 p.m., "Mina" was located 100 kilometers north of Laoag City with maximum sustained winds of 110 kilometers per hour (kph) near the center and gustiness of up to 140 kph. Pagasa said the typhoon was moving north-northeast at 11 kph and is expected to be 330 kms northeast of Ilocos Norte or 80 kms northeast of Basco, Batanes by Tuesday afternoon. By Wednesday afternoon “Mina" is forecast to be 430 km northeast of Basco, Batanes. By Thursday afternoon it is due to be 800 kms northeast of Basco, Batanes or 220 kms south-southeast of Okinawa, Japan. Due to heavy rains brought by “Mina", Storm Signal No.3 remains in effect in the following areas: • Cagayan, • Kalinga, • Apayao, • Abra, • Ilocos Norte, • Babuyan Group of Islands, and • Batanes Group of Islands. Pagasa also said Signal 2 remains hoisted over: • Isabela, • Ifugao, • Mt. Province, • Benguet, • La Union, and • Ilocos Sur. Pagasa also said Signal 1 remain in effect in: • Aurora, • Quirino, • Nueva Ecija, • Nueva Vizcaya, • Tarlac, and • Pangasinan. On the other hand, Pagasa said "Lando" slightly weakened and continues to move east-northeast toward the Northern Palawan-Mindoro area. Pagasa said "Lando" was located 300 km west-northwest of Puerto Princesa City as of 4 p.m., with maximum sustained winds of 75 kph near the center and gustiness of up to 90 kph. It was moving east-northeast at 15 kph and was expected to be 140 kms west-northwest of Coron, Palawan Tuesday afternoon. By Wednesday afternoon it is expected to be 60 kms north of Alabat, Quezon. By Thursday afternoon it is expected to be 210 kms east of Casiguran, Aurora, Due to this weather disturbance, Signal No. 2 remains in effect in two areas, including: • Northern Palawan, and • The Calamian Group of Islands. Under Signal 1 are: • Oriental Mindoro, • Occidental Mindoro, • Lubang Island, • Romblon, • The rest of Palawan, and • Cuyo Island. Pagasa continued to remind residents in low-lying areas and near mountain slopes to watch out for possible flashfloods and landslides. It also warned residents in coastal areas to be alert for big waves or storm surge generated by "Lando" and "Mina." - GMANews.TV
