Duterte asks Cayetanos: Kailan kaya matapos ang dynasty ninyo?

President Rodrigo Duterte on Tuesday ribbed the Cayetano family over their dominance in politics in Taguig City.

Duterte was acknowledging the Cayetanos present at the launching of the employment program 911 TESDA when he quipped: “Kailan kaya matapos ang dynasty ninyo?”

Present during the event held at TESDA Complex in Taguig were Speaker Alan Peter Cayetano, his wife Taguig Representative Lani Cayetano and his brother Taguig Mayor Lino Cayetano.

The Speaker is the brother of Senator Pia Cayetano and one of the children of the late Senator Rene Cayetano.

The president, however, said he can be asked the same question since he belonged to a political family, too.

His daughter Davao City Mayor Sara Duterte is on her third term while Sebastian Duterte won as city vice mayor in the 2019 midterm elections.

Duterte’s other son, Paolo, is the congressman for the city’s first district.

“Well you can ask the same question safely with me. ‘Yung mayor si Inday, the vice mayor si Baste,” the president said.

“Si Pulong hindi ko na nakikita, papalit palit ng partido. Baka NPA [New People’s Army] na lang siya, mas mabuti pa,” he said.

Sara Duterte has been floated as a possible successor to her father but she remained coy about her political plans. In February, the mayor said running for president is a decision that requires a lot of thought and that she might come up with one by January 2021.

The president backs an anti-political dynasty law but raised concern on whether it will succeed.

The Palace said in May that Duterte believes the people will be the ones to decide who will be voted into office. —LDF, GMA News
