AFP, PNP mourn Gina Lopez’s death
The country's soldiers and police officers mourned the death of former Environment Secretary Gina Lopez on Monday.
In a statement, Armed Forces of the Philippines (AFP) chief of staff General Benjamin Madrigal Jr. said the military and Lopez have been partners in the pursuit of charity works and various advocacies.
"Ms. Gina might have left us, but the AFP shall carry-on with and continue to be inspired by her aspirations for clean environment and safe and protected children," Madrigal said.
For its part, Philippine National Police (PNP) spokesman Police Brigadier General Bernard Banac said police are saddened with the passing of Lopez, noting that Lopez and the PNP worked together in enforcing environmental laws, particularly those against destructive mining activities.
“She will continue to be an inspiration as the PNP pursues its core values of ‘maka-Diyos, makabayan, makatao at makakalikasan,’” Banac said in a separate statement.
Lopez passed away before dawn on Monday at Makati Medical Center.
She succumbed to multiple organ failure after battling brain cancer. —NB, GMA News
