Manila ranks 54th out of 56 countries in 2019 quality of life index
Manila ranked 54th out of 56 countries in a 2019 survey that tracked global prices and living standards worldwide, dropping two spots from its 2018 standing.
Deutsche Bank (DB) Research’s eighth annual “Mapping the World’s Prices” survey, released in May, measures quality of life through various factors that affect living standards such as consumer purchasing power, regional crime and safety, and overall quality of healthcare availability.
Manila’s ranking places it right after Dhaka, Bangladesh, and before Beijing, China.
The Philippines ranked 53rd in the Purchasing Power Index, 46th in Safety, 45th in Healthcare availability, 54th in Pollution, and 51st in the Traffic Commute Time Index.
Manila placed 10th in the Cost of Living Index, which measures the general cost of consumer goods.
The top five in the Quality-of-Life index are Zurich, Switzerland (1st); Wellington, New Zealand (2nd); Copenhagen, Denmark (3rd); Edinburgh, United Kingdom (4th); and Vienna, Austria (5th).
DB clarified that their research is “not a definitive guide” as quality of life is a subjective measure. —Julia Mari Ornedo/LDF, GMA News
