GMA News Research member wins Best Statistical Reporting award
GMA News Research's Brenda Barrientos-Vallarta won Best Statistical Reporting in Online Media at the 9th National Statistics Month Media Awards of the Philippine Statistics Authority for her story "Where the Votes Are."
The story, published on GMA News Online ahead of the May elections, broke down the voter registration data of vote-rich regions, provinces and cities for Eleksyon 2019.
The report showed Commission on Elections (Comelec) data of 61,843,728 registered voters for the Elections 2019, 13.76 percent higher than the 54,363,844 million in 2016.
Barrientos-Vallarta was cited for "epitomizing the idealistic notion of fair and balanced journalism, thereby giving equal weight to both sides of an argument as demonstrated on her online report."
The story was produced for the web by Marisse Panaligan and Jessica Bartolome of GMA News Online.
GMA News Online was also cited for its "significant role and contributions in promoting and popularizing official statistical information to the public."
The National Statistics Month (NSM) was first commemorated in 1990 pursuant to Presidential Proclamation No. 647 signed by former and late President Corazon Aquino on September 20, 1990. It aims to "promote, enhance and instill awareness and appreciation of the importance and value of statistics to the different sectors of society."
It also aims to "elicit the cooperation and support of the general public" in upgrading the quality and standards of statistics in the Philippines. —Ma. Angelica Garcia/JST, GMA News
