Mild quake rocks Leyte anew


A mild quake rocked Saint Bernard town in Leyte province Friday night, but did not cause any casualty or damage, the Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology said. Phivolcs said the quake was tectonic in origin and measured magnitude 2.7. It was recorded at 7:54 p.m. and the epicenter was traced 6 km northeast of Matalom in Southern Leyte. It was the fourth quake so far to hit the country Friday, and the third to hit the Visayas area. Friday night’s quake was felt at Intensity II in Saint Bernard, Leyte, where a landslide buried more than 1,000 residents last year. However, Phivolcs said Friday night’s quake did not cause any damage. It added no aftershocks were expected. Phivolcs issued a belated report that another quake rocked Bantayan Island in Cebu at 10:47 a.m. The quake was traced 4 km northeast of Madridejos town in Bantayan Island in Cebu. It said the quake was tectonic and was felt at Intensity II in Bantayan Island, Cebu. No damage or aftershock was expected. Before dawn Friday, a quake measuring magnitude 5.4 rocked Borongan, Eastern Samar at 5:43 a.m., and was felt at Intensity IV in Borongan, Eastern Samar and Catubig, Northern Samar; Intensity III in Palo in Tacloban, Leyte and Catarman in Northern Samar; and Intensity II in Lignon Hill, Albay; and Bulusan, Sorsogon. The first quake for the day took place at 12:03 a.m., at 27 km northeast of Pasig City. The magnitude-3.5 quake was felt at Intensity II in Quezon City. - GMANews.TV
