BARMM a ‘game-changer’ in ensuring peace in Mindanao —PNP

The setting up of the Bangsamoro Autonomous Region in Muslim Mindanao (BARMM) was the "game-changer" for peace in the southern Philippines, the Philippine National Police said as martial law lapsed with the end 2019.

"The game-changer really in the quest for peace in MIndanao is the establishment of the BARMM in predominantly Muslim areas that ratified the measure this year which is seen as a major step towards finally achieving lasting peace in Mindanao," PNP said in a statement.

"With this optimistic outlook under BARMM self-rule, the regional peace and order condition is expected to improve further as gleaned from the national crime environment and validated by positive public opinion," it added.

Hours before the termination of the martial law in Mindanao, the PNP assured that the "state of lawlessness" which prompted the declaration of martial law "has been contained."

The martial law in Mindanao was first declared on May 23, 2017 after the siege of Marawi started.

"During that period, government gained solid foothold on some influenced and threatened communities where it effectively established military and police presence," the statement read.

The PNP thanked the public.

"We express our sincere appreciation and thank the public for their patience and understanding, and for continued support and cooperation during the Martial Law period and beyond," PNP said. —NB, GMA News
