Brother and sister figure in hit-and-run incident in Laguna
An 11-year-old boy and his 6-year-old sister were injured and traumatized after they figured in a hit-and-run incident in Biñan, Laguna.
CCTV footage captured how the two siblings were hit by a motorcycle as they were crossing the pedestrian lane in Barangay Canlalay.
The two riders aboard the motorcycle stopped briefly after hitting the children but sped away afterward.
The two suspects eventually presented themselves to authorities.
The children’s mother, Amelia Eribal, said the kids were traumatized by the incident.
“Ayaw pa po talagang pumasok, natatakot po sa pagtawid-tawid. Kapag po may sasakyan na paparating, talagang napapakapit,” she said.
Last year, 23 vehicular accidents were recorded in Barangay Canlalay.
In 2018, there were over 4,000 hit-and-run incidents recorded across Metro Manila.
Experts blame this problem on a lack of road safety precautions.
“We have to remember that pedestrians should always be the priority sa road natin, hindi ‘yung motorized vehicle. Kasi masyadong car-centric ‘yung ating society,” transportation studies expert from UP Diliman Dr. Regin Regidor explained.
