PNP says number of violators of ECQ now over 70k


The Philippine National Police (PNP) on Tuesday said more than 70,000 individuals across the country have violated rules of the enhanced community quarantine being implemented due to the threat of the coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19).

Data from PNP Deputy Chief for Operations Police Lieutenant General Guillermo Eleazar showed that 71,540 people have violated the guidelines beginning March 17 to 30.

Of this number, 39,866 individuals were from Luzon while the rest came from the Visayas and Mindanao.

According to Eleazar, the commander of the Joint Task Force COVID-19 Shield, the number of those arrested has reached 19,340.

Those fined were 3,829 individuals while 48,423 others received warnings from authorities.

Eleazar also said a total of 601 individuals have been arrested for hoarding, profiteering and manipulating prices amid the strict quarantine.

President Rodrigo Duterte has placed the entire Luzon under enhanced community quarantine as the number of COVID-19 cases continue to increases.

Some provinces in the Visayas and Mindanao also placed their areas under strict quarantine.

Over 2,000 were already infected by the disease, according to the Department of Health.
