DepEd asks for parents' help in teaching school children under 'new normal'

The Department of Education (DepEd) on Wednesday urged parents to supervise their children’s learning amid the quarantine imposed to curb coronavirus transmission.

DepEd ICT Service Director Abram Abanil said they need parents’ help in guiding learners to adapting to the “new normal.”

“Kailangan talaga namin ng tulong ninyo dito with regards sa pag-aaral ng ating mga kabataan sa new normal. Ang ating mga teachers ay very limited na ngayon ang situation nila, mahirap talaga ‘yung conditions,” he said at a virtual press briefing.

Abanil said students can use their electronic devices to access learning materials, such as ebooks, that the department has made available for free for Smart and Globe users through the DepEd Commons. 

He added that DepEd is exploring alternative modes of learning that are technology- and paper-based.

“Ang DepEd, makapagbigay kami ng mga activities, makapagbigay kami ng tools sa inyo using technology pero nasa magulang talaga ang pag-supervise ng mga bata para gagamitin itong mga tools at mga activities na ito para matuloy naman ang pag-aaral ng ating mga kabataan,” Abanil said.

Meanwhile, the education official reported that they have trained 70,000 out of the 900,000 teachers nationwide to prepare them for the upcoming school year.

Classes have been suspended since February in some areas due to the coronavirus pandemic.

The government earlier recommended moving the opening of classes to September, except for online learning.  -NB, GMA News
