Palace mourns passing of ex-SC Justice Ameurfina Melencio-Herrera
Malacañang on Monday mourned the death of retired Supreme Court (SC) Justice Ameurfina Melencio-Herrera.
In a statement, presidential spokesperson Harry Roque said the Palace was “deeply saddened” by the passing of Melencio-Herrera who served on the high court from 1979 to 1992.
Roque hailed Herrera’s life and career, calling her an “embodiment of judicial excellence.”
“She topped the Philippine Bar Examinations, appointed the second woman Supreme Court Justice, and became the Chancellor of the Philippine Judicial Academy (PhilJa) – the training school for justices, judges, court personnel, among others,” he said.
“I am fortunate to have given the opportunity to be part of PhilJA upon the invitation of Justice and Chancellor Herrera.”
He added: “As tributes pour to honor the life and legacy of Justice Herrera, we pray that the Almighty grant her eternal repose. Farewell and rest in peace, Madame Justice.”
Flags at the SC Compound in Manila were lowered to half staff in honor of Herrera, according to SC Justice Marvic Leonen. —LDF, GMA News
