ECOP supports guidelines on workplace, transport ventilation

The Employers Confederation of the Philippines (ECOP) over the weekend expressed support for the ventilation rules set by the Labor Department on workplaces and public transport.

According to ECOP President Sergio Ortiz-Luis Jr., the group is willing to comply with the guidelines set by the government provided that these were not costly.

"Kung wala naman masyadong malaking gastos eh okay lang naman to get into that. After all, this is for the safety of the employees," he said in a report on GMA's "24 Oras Weekend" on Sunday.

The Department of Labor and Employment (DOLE) on March 3 released Department Order 224-21 which spelled out guidelines that include the installation and utilization of exhaust fans in indoor places.

The guidelines also mandate ventilation in air, rail, land, and sea transport, and other measures to improve and maintain the quality of air in the workplace and public transportation.

The department recommends maximizing natural ventilation through the use of doors, windows, and other openings. If natural ventilation is not feasible or inadequate, mechanical ventilation should be provided.

For air-conditioned spaces and heating, ventilation, and air-conditioning (HVAC) systems, the government mandates that the outdoor air supply should conform to the recommended breathing zone ventilation rates for air dilution and comfort control.

Those found violating the guidelines may face fines and sanctions. — Jon Viktor Cabuenas/DVM, GMA News
