PNP appeals vs. public display of affection amid surge in COVID-19 cases

The Philippine National Police (PNP) is discouraging people from displaying "physical, social and romantic relationships" in public, citing health protocols amid the COVID-19 pandemic.

"The virus may be right before them. Infection happens to families, it can happen to anyone, anywhere," said PNP spokesman Police Brigadier General Ildebrandi Usana on Wednesday.

As the country faces a surge in new COVID-19 cases, Usana said people "should maintain being cautious from the spread of the virus."

"And if you love your spouse, your children, you have to be conscious of the minimum health and safety protocols," Usana said.

Usana said he is hoping the public would observe the protocol even without police intervention, especially in commercial and recreational establishments.

"Sila na po ang magkusa maghiwalay properly in public," he said.

A Dobol B TV report by Mark Makalalad quoted Usana as saying that policemen are instructed to call the attention of people who are kissing, holding hands, or hugging in public.

Usana said the appeal is for "couples, close friends [who are] very dear to each other, family clans and group of people."  —KBK, GMA News
