Duterte greets Putin on Russia Day

President Rodrigo Duterte on Saturday congratulated Russian President Vladimir Putin on the occasion of Russia Day.

“I warmly congratulate Your Excellency and the people of the Russian Federation on the occasion of Russia Day,” Duterte said in a message.

“On this day of national unity and celebration, let me convey the Filipino people’s best wishes for the continued success and prosperity of your great nation,” he added.

Duterte also expressed optimism that the relations between the Philippines and Russia will continue.

“This year, the Philippines and Russia mark 45 years of warm and fruitful ties. It was my great pleasure to have commemorated this special milestone with Your Excellency on the 2nd of June,” the President said.

“I am confident that our strong relations will continue to thrive in the years ahead as we deepen cooperation in more areas of mutual interest, including in our common fight against the COVID-19 pandemic,” Duterte said.

Duterte has visited Russia twice, in May 2017 and October 2019.

He has repeatedly showered praises on Putin, whom he once called his “favorite hero,” for his support for the Philippines’ anti-terrorism campaign. —KG, GMA News
