Enrile defends wife's appointment to Vatican

Sen. Juan Ponce Enrile on Tuesday broke his silence and defended the appointment of his wife Cristina as Philippine ambassador to the Vatican. Radio dzBB reported that Enrile said his wife is qualified for the post and challenged anyone opposing it to file a complaint with the Commission on Appointments (CA). "I'm a sinner (but) she's not involved in my foolishness. As far as experience is concerned I think my wife is more than qualified to hold any public position," Enrile said. Enrile also said his wife did not ask for the appointment, but admitted that as his wife she had met with dignitaries, bishops, and cardinals in the past. Enrile also belied reports that his wife is estranged. "I live with my wife, she is a quiet person," he said. Mrs. Enrile's appointment gained controversy after she was named as envoy to the Vatican after Leonida Vera resigned her post. Vera reportedly resigned due to maneuvers stemming from her failure to have the Vatican assign cardinals in the Philippines who are less critical of the Arroyo government. - GMANews.TV
