Kadamay leader, activist 'Nanay Mameng' dies at 93

Activist Carmen Deunida also known as "Nanay Mameng" passed away on Monday at the age of 93, according to urban poor group Kadamay.

"Ikinalulungkot naming ibalita sa lahat na namayapa na ang aming dakilang lider at tagapangulong tagapagtatag na si Nanay Mameng sa edad na 93," read the Kadamay Facebook post. The cause of death was not mentioned in the social media post.

On July 13, Kilusang Mayo Uno asked for financial help for the medical expenses of the Kadamay chairperson emeritus who was brought to the Philippine General Hospital. The group said Deunida needs to be transferred to the intensive care unit of the hospital.

Nanay Mameng started joining the community activism since the Marcos dictatorship in 1978.

She also led protests against the Estrada government during the Second Edsa Revolution.

"Sabi nga ni Nanay Mameng, lahat raw ng presidente inabutan niya, pero makakamit lang natin ang pagbabago sa pagkilos para sa pambansang demokrasya," said Kadamay.

(Nanay Mameng said she experienced all the government but she said change can be achieved if we continue to pursue democracy.)

Before she died, Kadamay said Nanay Mameng also wished the freedom of all political prisoners during the Duterte administration.

"Sa madaling salita, dapat mapatalsik na si 'Dudirty' ika nga niya," the group also said.

(In other words, Dudirty [Duterte] must be ousted.)

Kadamay also quoted Nanay Mameng's iconic line: "Lalaban hanggang may dugo, titigil lang ako sa kapag ako'y nasa kabaong na!"
