The Philippine National Police on Wednesday reported a new fatality due to COVID-19 within the organization, bringing the total death toll to 101.
In a statement, PNP chief Police General Guillermo Eleazar identified the latest fatality as a police officer from one of the vital units stationed in Camp Crame.
"The 101st fatality of the PNP is a 35-year-old policewoman who tested positive for COVID-19 last August 5," he said.
Due to difficulty of breathing, she was transferred to a nearby hospital on August 14, the PNP said.
On August 23, she was pronounced dead by her attending physician due to Severe Acute Respiratory Distress Syndrome.
"I would like to express my heartfelt condolences to the bereaved family of our police officer and assure them every assistance that they need," Eleazar said.
In an update, the PNP said the total COVID-19 cases among its personnel climbed to 33,702 with 129 new infections.
At least 31,814 PNP personnel have recovered from the disease, while 1,787 are still active cases, according to the PNP.
More than 88% of the 220,000 PNP personnel have received COVID-19 vaccines.
A total of 92,093 or 41.46% of PNP personnel are now fully-vaccinated, while 104,457 or 47.02% are awaiting their second dose.
With this, Eleazar said 25,582 or 11.52% of police personnel have yet to be vaccinated. —Joviland Rita/RSJ/KG, GMA News
