Carpio: 1Sambayan aims to be the broadest opposition coalition for Eleksyon 2022
Retired Supreme Court Associate Justice Antonio Carpio on Monday said opposition coalition 1Sambayan is seeking to be the broadest coalition in the country since the regime of former Philippine leader Ferdinand Marcos.
“We are now 40 chapters in the Philippines, and we have 20 chapters abroad consisting of overseas Filipino workers. We are also talking to political parties to form the broadest political coalition since the end of [Marcos’] martial law,” Carpio said during a virtual press conference.
“It is not easy to keep a coalition intact, especially we have people from left to right. But we all believe in participatory democracy, free and fair elections, and constitutional rights, so we are broad,” Carpio added.
He also assured the public that 1Samabyan is inclusive to groups who share their values and principles.
“We are red-tagged, called yellow or old. And that is okay because we are really a coalition of all members of society,” Carpio pointed out.
Renee Co, 1Sambayan Youth convenor, agreed with Carpio in uniting polarized forces against the Duterte administration.
“We need to listen to people of various backgrounds and advocacies...as long as you love democracy and you fight for it,” Co added.
1Sambayan earlier said it was considering fielding either one of the following individuals to run for president in the 2022 polls: Vice President Leni Robredo, former Senator Antonio Trillanes IV and Manila Mayor Isko Moreno. — Llanesca T. Panti/RSJ, GMA News
