Tourists recount Odette's wrath in Siargao: 'Wala nang seawall'
Tourists and residents on Monday recalled how Typhoon Odette battered surfers' paradise Siargao, one of the best resort island's in the world.
As seen on Joseph Morong's "24 Oras" report, one of director Pepe Diokno's friends was watching the storm at a window when the crashing waves caused by the typhoon reached their hotel room.
They then hid in a garage, where they were stayed to keep safe from the violent winds and rain.
"Sa Burgos, the town... may seawall sila. Ngayon wala nang seawall, (The seawall in Burgos has disappeared.)," Diokno said.
Tour guide Doods Almacen said resorts were all destroyed after Odette's wrath.
"Back to zero talaga sir (We are back to zero here)," Almacen said.
"Lahat ng magagandang resort.. Mga beach, resort, ubos lahat. Lahat siguro 69% ng bangka, ubos. Lahat sira, (Beaches.. The resorts were all wiped out. The boats were 69% all gone and broken)," he added.
Among those destroyed were Port General Luna, where visitors go for their group tour; and the Cloud Nine Tower, a popular landmark.
Also damaged was the usually Instagram-ready Coconut Road.
Martha Jante Eusebio could not help but get emotional after she experienced how Odette battered the communities in the Island.
Eusebio said she was hearing dogs howling, people crying and recording their last will and testament as they feared for their lives in the typhoon.
Siargao residents are now asking for food and materials to help rebuild houses that were swept by the typhoon. —Consuelo Marquez/NB, GMA News
