Abalos quits MMDA, to focus on Bongbong campaign

Metropolitan Manila Development Authority (MMDA) chairperson Benhur Abalos has resigned from his post effective Monday.

"I would like to announce that I am resigning as MMDA chairman," he said in a press conference on Monday announcing his resignation.

Abalos said he would devote his time to his task as national campaign manager of former Senator Ferdinand "Bongbong" Marcos Jr., who is running for president in the 2022 elections.

“The campaign period is fast approaching and I will need to devote my time to Senator Bongbong Marcos' campaign as his national campaign manager,” Abalos said as he read his resignation letter he submitted to the President Rodrigo Duterte.

“Yes, Benhur will be our campaign manager,” lawyer Vic Rodriguez and Marcos’ spokesperson told GMA News when sought for his comment.

Campaign period for candidates seeking national posts, as well as for party-list groups, will start on Tuesday, February 8.

In January 2021, Abalos replaced former MMDA chairman Danilo "Danny" Lim, who passed away after contracting COVID-19.  —KBK/RSJ, GMA News
